CONSUMER UPDATE - FUEL & E10 PROBLEMS:
During 2008, Florida consumers reported to us the most E10 gasoline-caused engine problems-
Quick summary of issues reported include:
1 - Gas pumps not labeled E10 that actually do contain significant amounts of ethanol/alcohol...
2 - Gas pumps dispensing contaminated gasoline due to lack of proper gas pump preparation prior to switchover to E10 - Gas contained rust, sediment, dirt and water
3. Gas stations dispensing fuel over legal limit of 10% - Reports from FL have been as high as 48 %!
We also have received an above average number of reports for contaminated gasoline in the following states: Connecticut, New York, Missouri, Oregon, Texas, South Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Winter 2009, Maine exceeded Florida in E10 gas complaints reported to us; The problems are primarily with snowblowers, due to sale of contaminated gasoline.
Fuel-Up and Know the Facts about Ethanol E10 Gas
Ethanol alcohol is now blended into most gasoline sold at public pumps.
- Ethanol is a strong solvent/cleanser and drying agent that attracts water into gas.
- E10 gas can cause engine damage, poor performance, wear-down parts and lower mpg.
- Many areas do NOT label gas pump when ethanol is added.
- Follow simple precautions to decrease risk and help safely manage E10 fuel blends.
- E10 will increase to 15%, if EPA does not receive public opposition before 5/21/09.
Common symptoms of excess alcohol or water in gas:
Vapor lock and fuel starvation (stalling, hesitation, inability to start engine), corrosion/rusting, premature disintegration of fuel pump, oxygen sensor damage, clogging/plugging of filters, fuel injectors and carburetor... More damage caused by contaminated E10 gas...
